On October 29, 2024, torrential rains devastated eastern Spain, causing severe human and material damage. The province of Valencia was the most affected by the cold drop with rainfall reaching 771 liters per square meter in 24 hours in the municipality of Turis. This caused the rivers and ravines to overflow. The red alert mobile message sent by Civil Protection reached the population hours after the disaster had begun. According to official figures from the Government of Spain, there are 231 fatalities and 4 missing persons.
The torrent of water swept through Valencian towns such as Chiva, Aldaia, La Alcudia, Picanya, Paiporta, Sedavi, Torrent, Alfafar, Catarroja, Masanasa, Benetuser, and the La Torre district, among others.
Tens of thousands of volunteers arrived in the affected towns to clean the streets of mud, remove destroyed furniture, and assist residents by distributing food and essential supplies.
